Design Process

At Abae, the creative journey starts with a conscious decision to design with purpose and reduce our footprint. Our UK-based design team partners closely with Indian garment experts via digital platforms—minimizing airmiles and ensuring seamless collaboration. Unlike traditional fashion brands that seek inspiration through travel, our design philosophy is rooted in the timeless values of durability, comfort, and daily adaptability. Abae represents lifestyle over trend, and every garment is created with that ethos in mind.

GOTS Certified Organic Fabrics

Sustainability starts at the fiber level. We use only 100% organic cotton fabrics that are GOTS-certified, which guarantees they meet global environmental and social standards. Compared to conventionally grown cotton, our fabric has a 21.6% lower carbon impact and uses 25.4% less water. To align with our "Fashion for Life" strategy, we select premium-quality cotton (e.g., 210gsm jersey), offering both durability and comfort that lasts beyond seasons.

Planet Friendly Trims

Every detail matters. That’s why our trims are designed with end-of-life and repairability in mind. We use recycled paper buttons, locally sourced in India, which can easily be replaced at home. Our care package includes spare buttons and a mending tutorial, making repair accessible and easy. All trims and fabrics are 100% biodegradable, ensuring garments can return safely to the earth through our “Back to Earth” program.

Dyeing and Finishing

We dye our fabrics using 100% natural dyestuffs. This not only reduces carbon by 8.8% and water use by 1.9% through cold-batch dyeing but also supports our Cradle to Grave principle. Our factory’s advanced water purification ensures that no harm is done to local ecosystems, and the natural dyes create safe environments for workers, animals, and communities.

Manufacturing

All Abae garments are handcrafted at our ethical partner factory in India. Their values closely reflect our own—centered on craftsmanship, quality, and fair labor practices. Our artisans play a critical role in shaping each garment and are rewarded via our Bonus Pay Scheme, recognizing their dedication and expertise. We ensure each product meets superior finishing standards to truly embody our “Fashion for Life” concept.

Product Testing

Longevity is a promise. We carry out rigorous tests at every stage—evaluating our fabrics for strength, durability, and color fastness. Our garments are also tested through real-life use cases for comfort and functionality. Community feedback plays a vital role, helping us continually improve and ensure each piece can be truly cherished.

Small Batch Production

We reject fast fashion cycles and bulk manufacturing. Abae operates on small-batch production with a 100% full-price sell-through model. No markdowns, no waste. By cutting traditional promotional costs, we reinvest in quality and offer “Pay What You Can” opportunities, supporting inclusivity and sustainability in tandem.

Packaging

Every Abae package is made to return gently to the earth. We use locally sourced, 100% biodegradable packaging—right down to the outerbag, which is home-compostable. From product to packaging, nothing goes to landfill.

Transportation

We prioritize low-carbon logistics. All products are sent to our UK warehouse via sea freight, which emits significantly less CO₂ than road or air. Our 5-year plan includes establishing local manufacturing and distribution hubs to further reduce transportation emissions and support local economies.

Clothing Care

We believe in owning less and loving more. Each Abae garment comes with a Clothing Care Package—including spare buttons, patches, and instructions to care, wash, and repair your item. Repairing just one tee can save 7kg of carbon emissions. We also provide online tutorials and artisan support to empower customers in their care journey.

Mindful Mending

Our garments are made for real life—no poppers or zippers, just simple, repairable construction. Abae's community mending workshops bring people together through music, storytelling, and stitching. Visible mending is not just a skill but a celebration of life’s journey.

Fashion for Life

The goal is simple: wear your garments for life. With proper care and thoughtful repairs, Abae pieces are designed to age beautifully and be passed on through generations. And when they can no longer be worn, they can be planted—returning to the soil.
